We are currently seeking a Welding Manager on behalf of our client, a leading railcar manufacturer in the US transit industry.

Welding Engineer

As the Welding Manager, you will oversee the manufacturing processes and ensure full compliance with company and contract requirements, such as the Inspection & Test Plan (ITP) and associated documentation. The successful candidate will manage daily activities utilizing a team of direct reports, report progress and data, build and maintain strong customer relations, remove roadblocks impeding progress, and improve profitability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the welding special process to ensure it complies with company requirements, including creating new welding procedure specifications and associated procedure qualification records (WPS & PQR), supplier homologation & auditing, and maintaining the list of qualified welders.
  • Manage a team (primarily inspectors) to complete daily activities such as welding and dimensional inspections, documentation review, creating NCRs, and station move meetings.
  • Travel to suppliers to conduct audits for homologation, periodic oversight, and problem resolution.
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of a comprehensive welding process qualification program.
  • Oversee welder qualification and conduct periodic evaluations and requalification tests.
  • Establish and enforce quality control procedures, conduct inspections, audits, and non-destructive testing (NDT) to ensure compliance.
  • Continuously improve welding processes by analyzing data and implementing corrective actions.
  • Provide training and guidance to welding personnel on techniques, safety procedures, and quality requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, maintain accurate documentation, and collaborate with suppliers to establish quality requirements for materials and equipment.
  • Investigate and resolve welding-related issues, non-conformities, and customer complaints using root cause analysis.

Training/Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • AWS CWI certification
  • Extensive experience in welding processes and procedures, preferably in a manufacturing environment related to passenger rail car production.
  • Strong knowledge of welding and NDT codes and standards (e.g., AWS D1.1, D1.3, D1.6, ASME Section IX, ASNT-TC-1A).
  • Proven track record in welding process qualification and welder certification.
  • Familiarity with non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques and procedures. Preferably with previous or current Level II certification (MT, PT, UT)
  • Excellent understanding of quality management systems and continuous improvement methodologies

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Ability to work in a start-up, high-pressure environment.
  • Self-motivated team player with strong interpersonal skills essential for day-to-day operations.
  • Effective communication and leadership abilities.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to high-quality results.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to speak Spanish is desirable; familiarity with the passenger rail car industry is a plus.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

Compensation and Benefits

Base Salary: $90,000/yr – $105,000/yr
